Mutt’ wine defines art of blending

What does this have to do with wine? The same way that Americans inherently feel purebred dogs are of a higher quality ever pay $1,000 for a mutt? or take one to a dog show? Americans are stuck on purebred wines. We drink merlot. We drink chardonnay. We drink white zinfandel. But there s a ton of blended wines just waiting to nuzzle you with their wet noses, and they ve got enough well-heeled cousins that they really should not be called mutts.

Among the many wild plants and flowers and other natural items that adorn our tree are sprigs of white-blossomed pearly everlasting . . . maroon-colored cups from the northern pitcher plant . . . sweet goldenrod, with its light, aniselike scent . . . cones of staghorn sumac, picked crimson red in July . . . buttonbush branches, with their nubby, marblesize pods . . . shimmering, winglike, translucent seedcases from a variety of “weeds” . . . sprigs of sweet sorghum . . .

For a long time, Best Animated Short has been one of those Academy Award categories where the average viewer has seen exactly none of the nominees. In a high-profile year, one or two of the contending titles may be familiar thanks to pre-feature exposure in theaters or a choice DVD inclusion. For the most part, though, the cartoons are foreign, if not in origin than in lack of distribution.

Sen. John McCain and Congressman Ron Paul’s sites are like them, not very flashy and pretty direct, and Mike Huckabee comes off cool. But McCain has one item that beats out the competition — a DVD about his life. On the other hand, Paul, an obstetrician/gynecologist, adds an academic touch to his site with a section called “Dr. Paul’s Writings,” where he sounds off on everything from the weak dollar to defending the nation.

Warhol Museum going to the dogs … and cats

More cats and dogs The Warhol and Animal Friends will offer workshops for elementary and middle school students and teachers beginning March 8 from 10 a.m. to noon.
