Sen. John McCain and Congressman Ron Paul’s sites are like them, not very flashy and pretty direct, and Mike Huckabee comes off cool. But McCain has one item that beats out the competition — a DVD about his life. On the other hand, Paul, an obstetrician/gynecologist, adds an academic touch to his site with a section called “Dr. Paul’s Writings,” where he sounds off on everything from the weak dollar to defending the nation.

Christmas sales slump

There have been calls for a further cut in interest rates as figures released today show that high street sales fell to their lowest level in three years in 2007. Like-for-like sales across the sector rose by only 0.3 per cent in December compared to 2.5 per cent growth the previous year, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC). Analysts believe the credit crunch has resulted in more people choosing to save rather than spend.

TOKYO (AP) — Sales of Sony’s PlayStation 3 game machine sales totaled 1.2 million in North America during the key holiday season, the electronics and entertainment company said Monday. The performance gave a lift to its Blu-ray video format because the console also works as a Blu-ray player. Competition is intense among the latest video game machines, pitting Sony Corp ( SNE ). against Nintendo Co.’s popular Wii and Microsoft Corp.’s ( MSFT , Fortune 500 ) XBox 360.

Clueless Circuit City Scrooges Itself Out Of Christmas Sales

Turns out that “our employees are our most important asset” isn’t just a Dilbertian mantra. People really do matter, even more so when it comes to selling PCs, cameras, and televisions — stuff where most consumers are clueless and really do want a salesperson to help guide them through the process. One difference, though: these archetypcal customers aren’t as clueless as the leadership of Circuit City turned out to be.

Kerbside collections for Christmas trees

Waste disposal contractors Veolia will be picking up trees from streets around Banner Cross on Saturday and streets between Dore Road and Abbeydale Road, Dore, on Saturday January 12. Community drop-off points for unwanted trees are being set up on Saturday January 12 at St Lukes Church, Lodge Moor, Dobcroft Junior School, Pingle Rd, Millhouses, and the sports field at Coldwell Lane, Crosspool. Trees can also be deposited at Whirlow Hall Farm car park until Saturday January 20.

People urged to recycle Christmas cards

So far Planet Ark has recycled 500 million cards, turning them into new paper products. The group’s founder and chairman, Jon Dee, says Australia Post is teaming up with the Planet Ark this year to make sending the cards for recycling easier. “After people have put their unwanted greeting cards inside those envelopes, all they have to do is post them as any post box and Planet Ark will ensure that they get mashed and pulped and then turned into a range of paper based products,” he said.
