OIL plans community day to help raise Christmas funds

Oklahomans for Independent Living has teamed up with United Way to put on the OIL Community Day Saturday at the Main Street and Choctaw Avenue parking lot. Every year we have a Christmas party for kids with disabilities and their siblings, Pam Pulchny, associate director of OIL, said. We buy age-appropriate gifts for children 16 and under to be deliverd by Santa at the party.

It is a very expensive task to pull off and we have different fundraisers throughout the year to make sure the party is a success. The event, which is from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., is filled with activities for those who would like to help OIL with this effort. From noon until 2 p.m., local band Mudgroove will perform. There will also be a football toss, rock climbing wall and an obstacle course provided by the National Guard Armory of McAlester, as well as a bake sale by a local church group.

The community day will be held in conjunction with a poker run and raffle. The raffle winner will receive a 2007 custom Diamond C motorcycle/ATV trailer donated by the Freedom Riders. The Christmas party is planned for Dec. 1 at the McAlester High School cafeteria and will be attended by 250 people, according to Pulchny. It costs around $3,000 for the meals and the gifts, she said. We try to give out some nice gifts and make sure everyone has a good time.
