Times-News Christmas Cheer, which provides Christmas help for the less fortunate of Alamance County, plans to open its doors to applicants Monday through Oct. 17. The hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. The address is 331 S. Main St. in downtown Burlington. Christmas Cheer, a United Way Partner, acts as the clearinghouse for getting food, clothing and toys to the less fortunate.
A custodial parent or legal guardian of any child in the eighth grade or younger (but at least a year old), and senior citizens 60 years and older may apply for assistance at the Christmas Cheer office. Applications will not be accepted over the telephone or by mail. Director Dawn Sternal said applicants need to bring the names and telephone numbers of three personal references and proof of income.
Also, if you are a current recipient of DSS services or are getting assistance through either Burlington or Graham Housing, you must go to that office to obtain the “Christmas Cheer Verification of Public Assistance Form” before coming to Christmas Cheer to apply. Individuals or groups who want to sponsor children or the elderly are greatly needed and appreciated. The sponsorship process begins Nov. 10, but Christmas Cheer will work with you earlier if needed, Sternal said.
Last year, Christmas cheer made the holidays brighter for 4,078 people in Alamance County. Toys were provided for 2,303 children. Assistance was provided for 214 elderly people. Increased numbers of requests for aid are expected this year. Donations of non-perishable food, new toys, new children’s clothing and monetary contributions would be greatly appreciated.
