Empty kettles this Christmas?

OTTUMWA, IOWA — Some local charities are getting the jitters about the Christmas season. The shaky economy has many worried that they won’t be able to raise as much money this holiday fundraising season. Captain Jamie Pennington of the Ottumwa Salvation Army says they’re keeping a close eye on the economy. They’re hoping the red kettles still bring in enough money to support the Salvation Army.

“I understand people are probably going to have less disposable income this year than they may have in previous years, so we are concerned that that may affect the amount of money that people give to charities, including The Salvation Army,” Pennington said.
