The only way Christmas lights are a waste of energy is if your name is Scrooge. Christmas lights are a way of beautifying our community and it is disappointing more houses cannot find the time to put up at least one strand of lights. I realize for religious reasons some people do not put up lights but to save energy is just plain greedy. Each year millions of people race to the stores and spend most of their hard earned money on Christmas gifts for friends and family.
This is something that brings most people joy and happiness. Well why not give back to those you see more often than those you love, your neighbors? These are people that you say hi to every day as you are going to work, mowing your lawn or greeting at the mailbox. Christmas lights are the perfect holiday gift to add that smile to your neighbors’ faces every year. Each year, on the day after Thanksgiving, I spend two to three days setting up my yard and house with Christmas lights and props.
At least once every hour that I am outside, a different neighbor walks or drives by and stops to say hello. Every one of them has compliments and smiles and that brings me happiness. My overall point is that I spend a little energy each year displaying my Christmas lights for my entire neighborhood to enjoy. There is more energy wasted on the countless trips to stores to spend countless amounts of money on gifts than on the three hours a night Christmas lights are on.
