Christmas lights delight revellers

There was music, mulled wine, chestnuts and revellers in fancy dress when the Christmas lights were switched on in Higham Ferrers. The town’s Pop Idol star Kirsty Crawford sang Christmas carol Santa Baby and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. She said: “It was a wonderful day and the town is looking great.

“It means a lot to be singing here with people I know from the streets and the shops.” Pupils from Higham Ferrers and Henry Chichele primary schools also helped entertain the crowds by singing Little Donkey and Come All Ye Faithful. They were supported by Rushden Mission Band. Mayor Mike Beesley led the countdown to the lights switch-on.

He said: “It was an excellent day and great to see so many people turn out despite the cold weather.” After the lights were switched on fire-eater Kevin Burke dazzled the crowds with his daring stunts. Other events during the day were a farmers’ market, a Christmas fair, Santa’s grotto and a fun fair. Mum Sarah Morrison, 32, said: “The lights look lovely and it was a fun day.” See more pictures in Telegraph People on Saturday.
