To the Editor: I just love Christmas. The lights, the decorations, the excitement. But even more than the holiday decorations, I love this planet. It was with dismay that I passed Pearl Street Park in McHenry at about 9 p.m. Tuesday and saw the park brilliantly illuminated with holiday lights in almost every tree.
If the residents of this county are serious about reducing our carbon footprint, how about holding off on the holiday lights until after Thanksgiving? I don’t know how many kilowatts are used to festoon public places for the holiday season, but if all the parks in the area are illuminated and the lights run for almost two months, the environmental impact must be significant. Let s celebrate the Christmas season, but let s do it in a way that would please the one whom we honor on that holy day.
