Sugar Land’s free mulch offer at Maaco Park proved so popular that all of the mulch is now gone, according to city spokesman Doug Adolph. The mulch, which was generated by the city’s Christmas tree recycling program, was made available on a first-come, first-served basis until supplies were exhausted. In conjunction with Keep Sugar Land Beautiful, Sugar Land annually sponsors a program that allows Christmas trees to be recycled instead of taking up valuable landfill space.
The recycled trees were taken to a composting facility, ground into mulch, and Allied Waste then delivered two large containers of the mulch to Macco Park. As a result of the program, approximately 1,000 Christmas trees were diverted from the landfill, according to the city.
