Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN The jokes are older than the hills they come from, and the music is as traditional as it gets. But Ozark Jubilee has found audiences that never get tired of the tried and true, and will return to Rochester Monday for another afternoon of Christmas music and holiday hilarity. This is the 10th anniversary Christmas show from Ozark Jubilee, which is based in Branson, Mo.
The main attraction, as in previous years, is comedian Doofus Doolittle, as well as a cast of ace musicians and vocalists. The show was the fifth of its kind in Branson, and is one of the few traveling country music shows still around. Randy Newman, a.k.a. Doofus Doolittle, feels that’s a definite draw for audiences, since many people are familiar with Branson, either through visits or simply from word of mouth.
Newman also points out that the show offers a wide variety of country music, including some gospel. But music isn’t the only thing the show has to offer. There is comedy intermingled between the songs, something Newman feels gives the show a unique touch. “It’s a real upbeat show,” he says. “It’s good, clean, family entertainment.” He further describes the show as fast-paced and energetic, something to keep audience members engaged, whether they be 5 or 50.
Doolittle himself has a reputation as a first-class fiddler, and has accompanied many stars of the Grand Old Opry, including Mel Tillis and Porter Wagoner. The group’s tour will take them to 40 states in the course of seven months, and will feature over 100 shows.
