Silent Night Chapel and Museum, Oberndorf, Austria THE much-loved carol Silent Night was first performed in St Nicholas Church, Oberndorf, near Salzburg, on Christmas Eve 1818. The church was destroyed by floods in 1906, but you can visit the memorial chapel built on the site in 1937, and the nearby Silent Night and local history museum. At Christmas time, there s a tiny post office where you can post your cards with Silent Night stamps and postmarks.
Until Christmas Eve (Thursdays to Sundays) there s a Christmas Market in Silent Night Platz in the town. At 5pm on Christmas Eve, crowds from all over the world gather to sing Silent Night.
