Leamington Rotary Club is again providing the trees in Leamington and Whitnash to give people the chance to sponsor a light for absent friends or relatives. This year the donations will go to Macmillan Cancer Support which provides practical, medical, emotional and financial support to those affected by the disease.
The charity’s regional head fundraiser Bernadette Halton said: “When you think of Christmas you probably think of exchanging gifts, Christmas carol and festive cheer, but above all you probably think of spending time with the ones you love. “Sponsoring a light is a really uplifting way to remember someone who can’t be with you at Christmas and a great way of raising money for a good cause.
“We are also so grateful to Leamington Rotary Club for helping us with our promotions this year.” A special ceremony will be held when lights on the tree outside St Margaret’s church in Whitnash are switched on tomorrow at 5.30pm And the tree outside Leamington Town Hall will be illuminated as part of the Christmas lights festivities o n Sunday at 4.30pm.
People wishing to sponsor a light are asked to pay a ВЈ5 donation and in return will receive a card written in the name of the person they are thinking of. The names of the remembered will be displayed near the church, town hall and Royal Priors shopping centre. Nearly ВЈ25,000 has been raised for charity since the Rotarians started the initiative six years ago.
