During this busy holiday mailing season, volunteers with the Pittsburg County Community Christmas Dinner are hoping people remember to mail donations to help make the dinner possible. We re buying groceries, said one of the volunteers, who asked to remain anonymous, who is working on plans for the dinner. We re also buying fruits and nuts and so-forth to go into special holiday bags, so this is a time when donations are needed, he said.
Plans call for the free holiday meal with all the trimmings to be delivered on Christmas Day to any McAlester or Krebs residents who want to participate. No age or income guidelines are in place. Those who want to make a contribution to help make the free holiday meal possible can send a donation to: Community Christmas Dinner, P.O. Box 759; McAlester, OK 74502.
The telephone number for McAlester or Krebs residents to call to make arrangements to have the free holiday meal with all the trimmings delivered is 421-2920. It s answered 24 hours a day, the volunteer said. It s important that the calls be made, not only so cooks will know how much food to prepare, but also so precise directions can be given to the homes of those who want to participate.
Volunteers working on the community event are starting on their fourth decade, after celebrating the 30th Annual Community Christmas Dinner last year. The volunteer said the event will be held, regardless of the weather conditions. We don t know what the weather s going to do, but we ll do it rain, snow or shine, he said. A few years ago, the roads were iced over, so we got guys on four-wheelers to make the food deliveries, the volunteer said.
